THE SURF REPORT: Kids in the Hall “Death Comes To Town” premieres tonight on IFC–8/20/10

Brief SURF today as I’m sleep-deprived and will be catching up on TV this weekend.

BECAUSE FUNNY IS MONEY: Chelsea Handler will host the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards airing September 12. Trivia note: Handler marks the first female to host this show in 16 years since Roseanne Barr hosted the VMAs in 1994. (Sarah Silverman hosted the MTV Movie Awards.) Handler can definitely hold her own with the MTV crowd and it seems everyone wants to see her give Kanye West a hard time. Me included. Forbes’ media & entertainment writer Lacey Rose posted a very good piece about Handler after MTV announced her as host – take a look:

USA picked up COVERT AFFAIRS for a second season. Early heads up: be sure to tune in next Tuesday the 24th because the episode is all about Chris Gorham’s character Auggie, the blind agent. Gorham is terrific in this show but then, when isn’t he terrific?

GREAT GUEST CASTING FOR A GREAT SHOW: Michael J. Fox is booked to appear on THE GOOD WIFE as “a shrewd and cynical litigator” who will stop at nothing to win, even if it means using his own disability to help him win.

IDOL JUDGING: Supposedly Steven Tyler’s deal is done to be an IDOL judge and there are rumored talks going on with Mariah Carey. Will these judges make you watch?

TODAY’S SURF WRITTEN WHILE LISTENING TO: John Fogerty’s cover of the John Denver hit “Back Home Again” – you can listen to a sample here: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B002GYHIVM?tag=ilovethatsong-20

E!: 10pm: Keeping Up with the Kardashians (season premiere); 1030pm: The Spin Crowd (series premiere)
I do not understand who watches the Kardashians or why. I’ll leave it at that.

THE SPIN CROWD is a new series about publicists Jonathan Cheban and his business partner Simon Huck. I saw SPINDUSTRY, which E aired awhile back – that might’ve been the first draft of the pilot for this show. Whatever the case, Cheban is not likable or watchable. The show made me a little sick, as in nauseous.

HBO: 9pm: True Blood, 10pm: Hung, 1030pm: Entourage

HGTV: 10pm: HGTV Design Star finale

History: 10pm: Swamp People

Lifetime: 9pm: Drop Dead Diva, 10pm: Army Wives (season finale)
Barry Watson and the super-boring Bachelor Jake Pavelka guest in this week’s DROP DEAD DIVA episode.

TBS: 10pm: My Boys – Bobby thinks about doing something different with his life.

TNT: 9pm: Leverage

That’s a wrap for this week.
