THE SURF REPORT: THE DEEP END premieres, BURN NOTICE returns! 1/21/10
OOPS: LEVERAGE and SPECTACLE WITH ELVIS COSTELLO were on last night and I completely spaced on including them in the rundown. Sorry for the oversight. I’ve already set my season recording for both shows because both shows are entertaining week in and week out.
BRUUUUUUUCE AND ELVIS: Springsteen and Elvis Costello was a pairing I’d never seen and watching them wail on “I Can’t Stand Up for Falling Down” was, dare I say, a revelation. Both are passionate performers who also feel very strongly about music and the artists who influenced them. They talk a lot about that in the show too. Part 2 with the dynamic duo airs next Wednesday on SPECTACLE.
MODERN FAMILY: Another pitch perfect episode written by Steve Levitan and directed by Jason Winer (he directed the show’s pilot) that had Mitchell talking about what it was like to come out to his father years earlier while Manny had a date with a girl he met in an online book club and she turned out to be an adult in the form of the wonderful Kristen Schaal. With the Mitchell story, we saw again why he and Cam complement each other so well: Cam didn’t get upset when Jay introduced him to friends as “a friend of Mitchell’s” because Cam understood Jay was just being Jay. I love how Cam understands the core of the people he loves and he loves their flaws as much as he loves their good qualities. I love how Mitchell softens when he’s around Cam because he knows he’s loved no matter what. And I love when Cam microwaved the flowers and they burst into flame, only to have Mitchell comment, “Oh look, there’s two flaming things now.”
Kristen Schaal said what we all think when Manny speaks which is, “What 11 year old talks like this?!” Once again, Manny’s sensitivity and sweetness were in full force. The kid is an unstoppable force of love.
I love the push/pull between Phil and Claire but mostly I love that Phil is a big kid at heart and Claire is both impatient with it and clearly loves him for it too. I totally identify with that because I always find it’s the boy in the man that makes me love him most. Sigh.
BURN NOTICE SEASON PREMIERE: Tyne Daly guests in tonight’s season opener – that’s right, it’s a Cagney & Lacey reunion with Sharon Gless and Daly! And if you’re too young to know who Cagney and Lacey are, you’re a punk. Go Google it. BURN NOTICE returns tonight at 10pm on USA.
TOMORROW NIGHT – DON’T LOOK FOR JAY: No new Jay Leno Show tomorrow night, NBC will air DATELINE in the 10pm slot. It’s Conan’s last night as host of The Tonight Show and it’s sure to be an action-packed show.

Tonight’s rundown – there’s so much good TV, it’s tough to choose! Fire up the DVR.
ABC: 8:00pm The Deep End (series premiere), 9:00pm Grey’s Anatomy, 10:00pm Private Practice
THE DEEP END is a new show referred to as GREY’S ATTORNEY. It’s about a multi-culti group of young associates at a high profile Los Angeles entertainment law firm and the ambitious partners who run the firm and make their lives miserable. Tina Majorino, Billy Zane, Norbert Leo Butz (a fantastic Broadway actor/singer/dancer), and Matt Long (JACK & BOBBY) are just some of the talent in the show. It’s a light, fun show and putting it ahead of GREY’S makes total sense. David Hemingson created the show; he used to be an attorney and he wrote about a lot of his experiences as a young attorney. Hemingson’s TV pedigree includes LIE TO ME, HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER, AMERICAN DAD and the short-lived Fox comedy KITCHEN CONFIDENTIAL.
Izzie returns in tonight’s episode of GREY’S.
